Lions Operation Brightsight provides corrective spectacles to the underprivileged people throughout the Republic of South Africa as well as the neighbouring states. Since its inception in July 1978 thousands of spectacles have been distributed to people, bringing smiles to the faces of senior citizens and children and indigents. Without the help of Lions Clubs and Operation Brightsight they would have gone through life with impaired vision.
OBJECTIVES To receive prescriptions from Lions Clubs, Provincial Hospitals, Optometric Clinics, and various other organisations and to process these scripts at low cost using pre-owned frames that are in excellent condition fitted, with new prescription lenses.
CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT FOR 2009 / 2010 Control of Lions Operation Brightsight is in the hands of the Governing Body consisting of the Council of Governors of Multiple District 410.

COST One pair of spectacles on a script R90.00 and two pairs R120.00, within the standard script range for the same patient. High scripts will be quoted on, after the script has been received. The Lions Club will be advised of the cost and approval obtained before the spectacles are made.
OPERATION Scripts are received from Lions Clubs and others. Script details are entered on the computer. Scripts are scrutinised and lenses are purchased. Frames are selected and frame and prescription is sent to a technician. Technician grinds lenses and fit lenses to frames. Spectacles are examined and cleaned. Suitable spectacle cases are selected and the spectacle and prescription is placed in the case and dispatched to the Lions Club.
OPTOMETRIST Lions Clubs should contact an optometrist in their area and negotiate for the tests to be done free, at the expense of the Lions Club or reduced fee to the patient. It has been found that many optometrists may give their time freely as a social contribution to your club and to the community.
If the eyes of scholars are to be tested, care must be taken to obtain a completed indemnity form from the parents or guardian.
